The Will to Win
written by Kara - Jun 30, 2009

Will Mitchell put together a new course record yesterday at the GLT Regular Series Canada Day Week Event, hosted by Glen Eagle Golf Club. Mitchell posted a –9, 63 to take home the 1st place cheque for $1750.00 and his first GLT crystal trophy. Mitchell is on hiatus from the Canadian Tour, home in Ontario to be with is Father, Scott Mitchell who is suffering from his battle with Cancer. Mitchell started playing the GTL back when he was still an Amateur and has successfully kept moving up the professional ranks. He had a long wait yesterday after posting his 63 as their was a full field of 99 players behind him including past winners of the same event (Jim Zwolak, Dennis Hendershott, Brian McCann, Nic Mazze) among the other list of qualified players. Even Nationwide Tour Member, Dave Morland IV made a stop to play this week as there was no event on the schedule for them. 2007 winner, Jim Zwolak finished 2nd along, posting a score of –7, 65 and Joe Rinker of London finished 3rd with a 67. 24 players were subpar.

The GLT stops next at the ever-popular Royal Ashburn Platinum Stop next week (Monday / Tuesday). Another strong field is expected.

Eustace wins 4 GLT Am Title
written by Kara - Jun 29, 2009

Craig Eustace of Ingersoll, On won his 4th GLT Amateur Series trophy this past weekend at the Silver Lakes event.  Eustace had a stellar round going... until he got to the 16th hole and made a double, followed up by a triple on the par 3, #17.  Eustace finished with a 2 over, 74.  He left the door open for Andrew Gallo of Toronto who was in the final group and only one shot back.  Hole #18 is a Par 5 and Gallo knew he had a birdie putt to tie, but just came up short.  The A Flight had a dramatic finish, a playoff for 1st place between 3 competitors:  Denis Kompare, Sean Harvey and Justin Wong.  It was sudden death, all three made bogies on Hole #1 and moved then to Hole #9 - Kompare took home the bragging rights and 1st place with an easy par.  Andrew Schlegel was the B Flight winner, posting a solid 83.  He mentioned he had played this course in the past, as he has family just down the street.  The Next Am Series event is another Major - hosted by Royal Ashburn.  This will be the first time the GLT Amateur Series visits this great venue, we are expecting a terrific turnout.

Craig Marseilles wins at Woodington Lake
written by Kara - Jun 15, 2009

Craig Marseilles of Maple, Ontario is the latest GLT Winner on the Regular Series.  Marseilles, who just came off a win last week at Huron Oaks for an OPGA event, left after his round atop of the leaderboard commenting "my 4 under won't hold up, there is a very strong field behind me".  But, as it turned out.... no one in the field was able to match or beat his score of 68.  Woodington Lake was a new venue on the GLT roster and the course was well liked by the players.  Runner up, Brian McCann said about the layout "It is the type of course where your game has to be on, there is a lot of trouble if you go after it without thinking it through properly".   Past Champions Ben Ferguson  and Andrew Jensen both made a run at Marseilles, but came up a little too short and lost a few shorts coming in.

Mystic Drama - An Exciting Finish
written by Kara - Jun 25, 2008
It was a very exciting 3rd and final round today at the Mystic Platinum Event.  The field saw more shifting and movement on the leaderboard throughout the day.  Leaders fell back and players came from behind.  Cieseilski was lurking his way up the board and had it 2 under par with 2 holes to play, but made an error off the tee on 17, hitting his tee ball in the hazard which lead to a bogie and falling out of contention.  A new course record was shot by Terry O'Brien (68, -4), which ultimately placed him at the top of the board with a 3-day total of -2.  Young gun, Dustin Wetherup also posted an impressive 3 under, 69 to finish at -2 total.  Brian McCann, started the day with a 1 shot lead and was favoured to win.  McCann started his day in total control and not making a bogie until the 15th hole.  Sitting on 15, McCann had a 2 shot lead over the field.  McCann was not able to bounce back and unfortunately made back-to-back bogies on 17 and 18 took him out of chance to playoff for the win.

Wetherup and O'Brien warmed up and headed out to the Par 4, 18th Hole to a sudden death playoff.  O'Brien and Wetherup both hit driver off the tee.  After their second shot in, both players found the back greenside bunker.  O'Brien was unable to make his 10 foot par putt which left the door open for Wetherup who drained his 8 foot uphill putt for the win.  This was Wetherup's first Professional victory.

Wetherup turned Pro last Spring on the Great Lakes Tour.  He spent his winter between Florida and North Carolina playing on Southern Developmental Tours.  His summer plans include playing in the GLT Platinum events and will try to qualify for some Nationwide Tour events and Canadian Tour events when they hit Ontario.
